By the time Camille reached Virginia on August 19, 1969, it was no longer a hurricane. Yet in just eight hours, nearly 27 inches of rain fell over Nelson County, triggering catastrophic floods and landslides with little warning.
Most victims did not simply drown. The mountainsides themselves began to collapse.
This is the story of the deadliest natural disaster in Virginia’s history — and the second disaster that struck after Camille was already considered dead.
Casualty figures vary between official sources, so this video uses government records where possible and notes discrepancies rather than selecting the highest estimate.
