The Dhakeswari Mata Temple, also known as the Dhakeswari Durga Temple, is a historic and sacred shrine located in Kumartuli, Kolkata. The temple houses the original idol of Goddess Dhakeswari, which was brought from Dhaka (present-day Bangladesh) during the Partition of 1947. Believed to be over 800 years old, the idol represents Mahishasuramardini Durga with ten arms, accompanied by Lakshmi, Saraswati, Kartikeya, Ganesh, and her lion mount. Unlike most Bengali Durga temples, worship here follows North Indian Navratri rituals, with strict vegetarian offerings and unique traditions, making it distinct from the mainstream Durga Puja of Kolkata. Nestled in the cultural hub of Kumartuli, the temple stands as a symbol of heritage, faith, and resilience of refugees who carried their Goddess from Dhaka to her new abode in Kolkata. Today, the Dhakeswari Mata Temple continues to attract devotees and visitors during Durga Puja and Navratri, preserving a rare blend of history, spirituality, and tradition within the heart of Kolkata.
