RAF Conningsby Gold | RAF Typhoons, Moggy, Lancaster Bomber PA474

RAF Coningsby Gold brings together RAF Typhoon action and the unmistakable silhouette of the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight's Lancaster at RAF Coningsby in Lincolnshire. Enjoy a collection of aircraft-spotting highlights, including Moggy (F-OGY) from Typhoon taxiing and runway activity to a three-aircraft Typhoon flypast and Lancaster flying passes. RAF Coningsby is one of the RAF's two Quick Reaction Alert stations protecting UK airspace, alongside RAF Lossiemouth. Its two frontline Typhoon squadrons are 3 (Fighter) Squadron and XI (Fighter) Squadron. Coningsby's wider Typhoon community also includes 29 Squadron for pilot conversion training, 41 Squadron for test and evaluation, and the joint UK-Qatari 12 Squadron. That is five Typhoon squadrons with different roles, rather than a fixed count of aircraft on the airfield; aircraft numbers vary with maintenance, training and deployments. The Lancaster is the BBMF's Avro Lancaster B.I, serial PA474, also known as the City of Lincoln. Built at Broughton in 1945, she was completed too late to see wartime combat. Her later work included photographic survey flying in Africa and aeronautical research, before restoration to bomber configuration and joining the BBMF in 1973. The Flight moved to Coningsby in 1976. PA474 preserves the memory of the wartime crews and the people who supported them.
