In this excerpt, Shaykh Yahya Rhodus speaks about the relationship between the heart, the ruh, and the nafs, and the struggle that takes place within the heart. He explains how acts of obedience, remembrance, prayer, seeking knowledge, teaching, and good character bring light to the heart and strengthen its connection to the ruh. Through this continual work, the nafs is gradually purified, moving from nafs al-ammārah towards nafs al-lawwāmah and nafs al-muṭmaʾinnah. Shaykh Yahya also discusses the transformation of the nafs, and how, through spiritual discipline, it can cease to be an obstacle and become a means of support on the path to Allah.
