4 weeks ago, I bought Star Trek: Armada II, looking for a quick fix of nostalgia - but, sadly, it didn't launch. I complained to Claude Code. Then it launched, but the HUD didn't scale to my 21:9 screen. Things escalated a bit, 10 Claude Code prompts became hundreds, and 4 weeks later, I ended up with a mod that touches almost all visual elements of the game - while shipping none of the original game's assets. Try it out! Buy the game on GOG Galaxy, download and install from: https://github.com/cedrichaase/armada... or ModDB: https://www.moddb.com/mods/armada-ii-... A quick summary of what you see in the video: New 3D renderer, rewritten in Rust: per-pixel lighting and shadows, ray-marched explosions, shield hits, volumetric nebulae with ships in them, the Borg's holding beam. New title menus and a new HUD, drawn for widescreen and ultrawide screens. Online multiplayer: Internet – Online in the multiplayer menu, a join code, no weird Game Ranger, GameSpy or VPN workarounds. Gameplay: selections beyond sixteen ships, Shift+number adds to a group, grid hotkeys, long moves at warp. What you need: Star Trek: Armada II from GOG (patch 1.1). The installers for Windows, macOS (the game in a Wine bottle; CrossOver is the easy way) and Linux find the game, show what they will change, and can take it all out again. (I only tested on Linux so far, feel free to yell at me when things crash and I'll see what I can do - or, you know, send a PR) The HD textures in this video are remastered from the game's own art, so I can't redistribute them: copyright. The download doesn't include them. The repository has the pipeline to build them from your own copy of the game (textures/PACKS.md). I used https://app.inference.sh/ for that - that did cost some money though. Download: https://github.com/cedrichaase/armada... Source, and how it's made: https://github.com/cedrichaase/armada... Filmed on Linux under Proton at 3840x2160, every comparison recorded with and without the mod. Music: Star Trek: Armada II's own score. 0:00 Cold open 0:28 The intros 0:57 Before and after: space, battle, special effects 1:29 New title menus 1:51 Modern online multiplayer 2:06 The HUD and gameplay 3:04 Installing I'd love to hear what you think!
