🔅 Venerable Ajahn Dtun – What If Your Meditation Never Feels the Same Again?
Venerable Ajahn Dtun, a highly respected meditation master in the Thai Forest Tradition and a senior disciple in the lineage of Ajahn Chah, offers profound guidance for practitioners who wonder whether they can ever experience the same depth of peace they once found in meditation.
In this Dhamma teaching, Ajahn Dtun explains that one of the greatest obstacles to meditation is the tendency to compare the present with the past. After experiencing a peaceful state of mind, many practitioners begin to long for that same experience again. However, he reminds us that craving for previous states of samādhi only creates further restlessness and becomes an obstacle to genuine inner peace.
Using simple yet powerful examples—a child learning to walk and a mobile phone needing to be fully recharged—Ajahn Dtun illustrates that meditation develops gradually through patience, continuous effort, and wise practice. Rather than chasing extraordinary experiences, we should patiently return to our meditation object, whether it is the breath or Buddho, and repeatedly cultivate mindfulness in the present moment.
Ajahn Dtun also teaches that when the mind becomes peaceful, we should simply allow it to rest naturally. When the peaceful state passes, that is the appropriate time to cultivate wisdom. Likewise, if a meditation session is restless, we should leave that experience in the past without disappointment. Both peacefulness and restlessness are impermanent conditions that arise and cease.
Throughout the talk, he encourages practitioners not to believe discouraging thoughts that say, "You will never experience that peace again." Instead, we are reminded to develop Khanti Pāramī (the perfection of patience) and Viriya Pāramī (the perfection of energy), trusting that steady practice gradually strengthens the mind just as a child eventually learns to walk through repeated effort.
This inspiring teaching reminds us that true progress in meditation is not measured by extraordinary experiences but by our willingness to keep practising with patience, mindfulness, wisdom, and without attachment to the past.
May this Dhamma reflection encourage you to let go of craving, remain fully present, and continue cultivating the path with confidence, patience, and unwavering effort.
