In December 69 AD, Rome was burning.
The Year of the Four Emperors was reaching its brutal conclusion. Galba was dead. Otho was dead. Vitellius was losing his grip on power. And while Roman soldiers fought Roman soldiers in the streets, the Temple of Jupiter — the most sacred building in Rome — caught fire on the Capitoline Hill.
But Vespasian had played a completely different game.
While Vitellius feasted and his armies fought in Italy, Vespasian stayed in Alexandria and controlled something Rome desperately needed: Egypt and its grain supply. His armies eventually marched into Italy, defeated Vitellius's forces at the Second Battle of Bedriacum, and fought their way into Rome.
This is the finale of the Year of the Four Emperors — the chaotic year of Roman civil war in 69 AD that saw four emperors rise and fall in just over a year.
In this episode:
• How Vespasian was proclaimed emperor in Egypt
• Why Vespasian refused to rush toward Rome
• How Egypt's grain supply gave Vespasian enormous leverage
• The Second Battle of Bedriacum and the destruction of Cremona
• Roman soldiers fighting and killing other Roman soldiers
• The battle for Rome itself
• The burning of the Temple of Jupiter
• The final hours of Emperor Vitellius
• How Vitellius was dragged through the streets of Rome
• How Vespasian finally became emperor
• Why Vespasian understood Rome better than Galba, Otho, and Vitellius
• How the Year of the Four Emperors finally ended
Four emperors. A little over a year. Roman armies fighting Roman armies. A sacred temple destroyed by the soldiers who were supposed to protect Rome.
And at the end of it all, the man who won was the one patient enough to understand what the empire actually needed: food, loyalty, and time.
This is Part 4 and the finale of the Year of the Four Emperors.
