My first time hearing “My New Career” by Japan — and this is my genuine, real-time reaction as I hear the song for the very first time.
After discovering Japan and *Gentlemen Take Polaroids*, I’ve become fascinated by this band, especially Mick Karn’s incredible fretless bass playing and the unique sound Japan was creating at the beginning of the 1980s.
A lot of you have asked me to start filming my ACTUAL first reactions instead of only talking about the music afterward — so I decided to take you along for the walk.
No listening beforehand. No prepared review. I put my headphones in, hit play on “My New Career,” started walking, and recorded what happened.
As a bass player, one of my favorite things about discovering music for the first time is hearing a musician do something that completely catches me off guard. Japan has already given me plenty of those moments.
If you enjoy these real-time first-listen reactions, let me know in the comments what song I should hear next. I’d love to make this a regular part of Ethan’s Bass World.
And if you’re a longtime Japan or Mick Karn fan, tell me what I should be listening for as I continue exploring their music!
Thanks for watching!
