What is the biggest red flag in an age-gap relationship? It’s not the number of years between two people—it’s an imbalance of power and voice.
In this video, I @dr.alyonaprikhidko explore the psychology of age-gap relationships, power dynamics, coercive control, and the difference between healthy deference and slowly disappearing inside a relationship. Drawing on the Power and Control Wheel and Evan Stark’s work on coercive control, I explain how relationship inequality can develop through small, almost invisible patterns: whose preferences matter more, whose schedule gets protected, who controls the finances, how independence is received, and what happens when one partner disagrees.
The real question isn’t: “How big is the age gap?” It’s: “Do both people have an equal right to have a voice, make choices, grow, disagree, and maintain an independent life?”
Healthy relationships make room for both people. Power imbalances slowly make one person’s world smaller.
