Why do successful men feel lost in life even when they have a successful career, business, family and everything they thought they wanted? Feeling lost in midlife, disconnected from yourself, lacking purpose or wondering whether you're experiencing burnout can be confusing — especially for high achievers who are used to knowing exactly where they're going.
I spent 18 years building successful businesses, yet eventually I felt like I'd lost myself. I didn't know who I was anymore, what I wanted or where I was going. I questioned burnout. I questioned whether I was simply unhappy. But taking time off didn't fix it. The truth was different: I wasn't lost and I wasn't burnt out. I was unaligned. I'd outgrown parts of the life and identity that had previously brought me success, motivation and fulfilment. Understanding that difference changed how I approached finding myself again and what I now call The Drift.
For years, the things I did in business gave me energy, purpose and results. But people change.
The person you were 10 or 15 years ago isn't necessarily the person you are today.
You can become more experienced, successful and capable while simultaneously becoming less connected to the work and identity that helped create that success.
That's when successful men can start asking:
Why do I feel lost when my life is going well?
Why don't I enjoy the things that used to motivate me?
Am I burnt out?
Have I lost my purpose?
Why don't I feel like myself anymore?
Do I need to start my life again?
Sometimes the answer isn't to throw everything away and start over.
You may simply have outgrown the version of yourself who built your current life.
I call this The Drift — a gradual disconnection from who you are, what fulfils you and where you genuinely want your life to go.
For me, things began changing when I stopped desperately trying to get my old self back. I stepped back, zoomed out and started understanding the person I'd become.
That allowed me to find new activities within business that motivated me again and reconnect success with fulfilment.
If you're a successful man who feels lost or disconnected, this video explains why you may not actually be lost at all.

❓ FAQ — FEELING LOST, BURNOUT, IDENTITY & MIDLIFE
Why do successful men feel lost in life?
Success doesn't guarantee fulfilment. A man can build a successful business, career and lifestyle while gradually becoming disconnected from the identity, work or goals that once motivated him.
Why do I feel lost even though my life is successful?
You may have changed while your goals, routines or definition of success haven't. What fulfilled you 10 years ago may no longer fit the person you've become.
Am I burnt out or have I lost my purpose?
Burnout can involve exhaustion associated with prolonged stress, but feeling disconnected can have other causes too. In my experience, rest didn't solve the problem because I had become unaligned with what motivated and fulfilled me.
What does it mean to outgrow your old identity?
It means recognising that the interests, goals, roles or activities that once defined you no longer fully represent who you are today. Growth can require getting to know yourself again rather than trying to recreate your old identity.
Do I need to start over if I feel lost in midlife?
Not necessarily. You may be able to use the experience, skills and life you've already built while changing the parts that no longer feel aligned with who you've become.
How do you find yourself again in midlife?
Start by stepping back rather than forcing an immediate answer. Consider what still gives you energy and meaning, what you've outgrown and what you want your next chapter to represent.
What is The Drift?
The Drift is my term for the gradual disconnection from yourself that can happen while pursuing success, responsibility, achievement and the life you thought you wanted.
