Andrea Hennigan spent seven years working the same labor and delivery floor at Massachusetts General Hospital as Lindsay Clancy, and the friendship outlasted the job. In the Lindsay Clancy murder trial, the case known nationally as the Duxbury Mom trial, Hennigan is the one who reads the actual text messages into the record, and the last one is dated the day before three children died. The friendship shows up first in small, ordinary ways. After a November 2022 lunch where Lindsay described insomnia and brain fog and said she did not feel ready to go back to work, Hennigan and two other nurse friends encouraged her toward therapy and support groups, and Hennigan passed along names of obstetric social workers. Around Thanksgiving, Lindsay mentions a perinatal-specific program her mother-in-law had told her about at South Shore Hospital. By early January the texts turn more direct. On January 2, 2023, Lindsay tells Hennigan she cannot get together right now because she is in an intensive program, never naming it. Then, on January 23, 2023, the day before the killings, Lindsay texts Hennigan again. She is no longer in the program. She is continuing to work with her psychiatrist to find the right medication, one that will let her sleep at night and still function during the day. She has had a lot of bad or negative side effects, she says, and has had to switch medications more than once. Hennigan testifies the tone of every one of these messages was hopeful, never alarming. She had no concern Lindsay would hurt herself. On cross-examination she describes Lindsay as an excellent, incredibly nurturing nurse who loved her job, and recalls her checking the home security cameras on her phone during night shifts because she was, in Hennigan's own word, very concerned about her kids. Her closing characterization is direct: Lindsay was a very loving, caring mother, exactly the kind of big family she had always wanted. That January 23 text is the closest thing to a dated, documented forecast anywhere in this trial, written by Lindsay herself, read by a friend who had no idea what was coming less than a day later. The repeated medication changes and their side effects sit at the exact center of the defense's postpartum psychosis theory, a documented medical struggle right up until the end, delivered in Lindsay's own words rather than anyone else's account of her. Lindsay Clancy is charged with the deaths of her three children, five-year-old Cora, three-year-old Dawson and eight-month-old Callan, on January 24, 2023, in the family's Duxbury home. She is presumed innocent. Her defense does not dispute what happened that day. It disputes whether postpartum psychosis left her criminally responsible for it, and this text is exactly the kind of evidence both sides will point to for opposite reasons. Hennigan is the first of three consecutive friends called on Day 8, each independently describing the same pattern: insomnia, medication struggles, a hopeful tone, and no red flag anyone recognized before January 24. --- KEY MOMENTS 0:50 - Hennigan gives Lindsay the names of obstetric social workers and support groups 3:01 - January 2 text: Lindsay says she is "involved in an intensive program" 3:46 - The peak: the January 23 text about switching medications for bad side effects 5:10 - Hennigan: no concern Lindsay would harm herself, the tone was "positive and hopeful" 11:39 - Closing characterization: "a very loving, caring mother" --- COMPLETE CASE COVERAGE justiceisaprocess.com SUBSCRIBE for daily trial coverage.
