An alternator became hot while it was disconnected and had no belt on it. Ed Smith explains how a bad diode can create a current drain—and then takes Barry T through a collection of unusual engine-building problems, old racing tricks and repairs that many people would assume were impossible.
Ed explains how a machine shop straightens a bent crankshaft before machining it, why a crank can spin true and still be bent like a banana, and why even a brand-new camshaft should be checked. He also discusses the W&H Du-Coil ignition, the Borg-Warner T-85 and T-10, and the spring-loaded Holley accelerator-pump setup racers used at the starting line.
Other questions cover a mismatched Chevrolet 283 that survived for two weeks, Ford FE plug-wire crossfire, hot-rod A/C condenser placement, small-block Chevrolet oil pressure, piston knurling, oil-filter valves, 351 Cleveland 2V versus 4V heads, a 377 small-block Chevrolet on pump gas, and why Ed drills main bearings from the back side.
Ed's answers reflect his shop and racing experience. Crankshaft repair, ignition routing, oil pressure, compression, fuel octane and carburetor setup must be matched to the exact engine, parts, vehicle and intended use.
