Why does life hurt, even when all we want is happiness?
We chase love, success, health, money, comfort, and security. But again and again, life brings change, loss, aging, sickness, separation, disappointment, and fear.
In this USC lecture, Khenpo Sodargye explains why Buddhism says suffering is not a mistake in life—it is something we must understand if we want real inner strength.
Buddhist teachings describe three fundamental sufferings:
1. The suffering of change: happiness disappears when life suddenly changes.
2. The suffering of suffering: one pain has not ended before another one comes.
3. All-pervasive suffering: what seems comfortable now can become the cause of future pain.
They also explain eight branch sufferings of human life: the suffering of birth, aging, sickness, death, facing unwanted phenomena, not getting what one wants, being separated from loved ones, and the aggregates of attachment.
But this teaching is not pessimistic.
It helps us stop pretending life should always be easy. When we understand suffering clearly, we become less afraid of it—and learn how to turn pain into wisdom, courage, and inner strength.
Your suffering may feel personal, modern, and impossible to explain.
But Buddhism mapped it long ago.
