I was 21 years old when I unexpectedly lost my dad.
I was in my final months of university, recovering from another knee surgery and already struggling with my mental health when I received a phone call that changed my life.
My dad was only in his mid-50s. What started as a broken ankle ultimately led to a blood clot travelling to his lungs, something we only discovered after the post-mortem.
In this episode of MY STORY, I open up about that day, the guilt I carried afterwards and how losing the person I looked up to most affected me for years.
I talk about feeling that I needed to be strong for my family, pushing myself through my final university exams to make my dad proud, and the years of struggling mentally that followed.
For a long time, I don’t think I allowed myself to grieve properly. I kept going, convincing myself that being strong meant holding everything together, even when I was falling apart inside.
This is probably one of the most personal episodes I’ve shared.
Grief is different for everyone. We all process loss in our own way and in our own time.
This isn’t a story about how losing my dad made me stronger. It’s about the person I lost, what he meant to me and how much I still wish he could see the man I’ve become.
I hope he’d be proud.
This one’s for you, Dad. ❤️
