The Foxes' Round Verse 1 When moon hangs bright on yonder hill, And all the earth lies hushed and still, From briar deep and woodland brown, The foxes gather, one by one. Verse 2 With silent paw and amber eye, Beneath the lantern of the sky, They turn the ring where dew is spun, Their merry dance till night is done. Chorus Round they tread, and round they roam, Blessing field and hedgerow home. Leave the circle, let it be, Sacred to the wild and free. Hush your voice and slow your stride, For the foxes dance tonight. Verse 3 The elder folk in seasons old, Would tell the tale by firelight told, "Step not within that moonlit round, Where foxes blessed the hallowed ground." Verse 4 For every leap and every bound, Leaves fortune sleeping in the ground. The wheat grows tall, the lambs are strong, Where foxes kept their midnight song. Chorus Round they tread, and round they roam, Blessing field and hedgerow home. Leave the circle, let it be, Sacred to the wild and free. Hush your voice and slow your stride, For the foxes dance tonight. Bridge Should dawn reveal the emerald ring, Forget not what the old wives sing. Lift your hat and pass on by, With thankful heart and watchful eye. Final Chorus Round they tread, through age and time, Older than the church bell's chime. While moon and fox together meet, The earth remembers every feet. Though men may doubt with morning's light, The foxes dance each moonlit night. [End]
