Nobody in the Duke's house is allowed to make a sound below stairs, and on her second morning the new governess dances a jig on the kitchen flags. She does it for the child under the table, a little girl who has been hiding there since breakfast and will not come out for anybody. The kitchen boy claps. The cook forgets her dough. A small pale face comes out between the table legs to watch.
Then the clapping stops. A tall man stands in the doorway from the back stairs, in the finest coat that kitchen has ever seen, with hair as silver as an old man's and a face that is not old at all. Nobody below stairs has seen him there in three years. "Don't stop on my account, ma'am. If I weren't too old, I'd ask you for the next one." She puts her foot down. "Who says you are?"
Lucy Ambler is twenty-five, a village schoolmaster's daughter who has lived on the stairs of other people's houses since she was fifteen. The whole county calls her master Old Brackenholt, though he is thirty-six. He dines at four with a rug on his knees, every room but two is under dust sheets, and his sister means to keep it that way. Lucy once danced where everybody could see, and paid for it with her box on a step in the snow. What she does not know is why a duke who never comes downstairs came down to his kitchen that morning, and why he made that joke at all.
This is a story about a snow man in a duke's old hat, a stile in a wet park wall, a class of twelve girls singing the rivers of England to a jig, a bonnet fished out of a beck, a hayfork driven into the stubble, a dessert table where nobody laughs but one, and a small corded box that keeps going out of doors.
There is no music. Only one voice and one long year, told from a jig on the kitchen flags to a fiddle on the village green.
Chapters are below. Tell me in the comments what part of the world you are listening from, what the weather is doing outside your window, and whether anyone ever told you that you were too old for something you went and did anyway.
