If you want to become a better jazz musician, some of your most important practice might happen away from your instrument.
In this video, I'm sharing some of the jazz albums that have influenced my playing and that I think every developing musician can learn from. These aren't simply albums I think you should hear—they're recordings that can teach you about phrasing, vocabulary, harmony, feel, interaction, articulation, and developing your own musical voice.
Some are legendary records you've probably heard before. Others may be completely new to you. But each one has something different to teach us.
We'll listen to and talk about artists including Miles Davis, Oscar Peterson, Ray Brown, Cannonball Adderley, Wes Montgomery, Chet Baker, Joe Pass, Thelonious Monk, John Coltrane, Roy Hargrove, and more.
And don't just listen to the musician who plays your instrument.
Listen to how the pianist phrases. Listen to what the bass player does underneath the soloist. Listen to the drummer. Listen to how different musicians approach the same harmony. Find the moments that catch your ear—and then figure out why.
Because almost everything we're trying to learn in the practice room is already sitting there on great recordings.
