In this conversation with BrotherLee Time, Dr. Keanu Sai challenges one of the most basic assumptions many people hold about Hawaiian identity. Sai argues that the modern American definition of “Hawaiian” as primarily a racial or ethnic category does not accurately reflect how the term functioned during the Hawaiian Kingdom. According to Sai, “Hawaiian” historically referred to Hawaiian subjects in much the same way that “American” refers to an American citizen. That means, he argues, a person could be ethnically European, Chinese or from another background while still possessing Hawaiian nationality. The discussion immediately raises difficult questions. What did it mean to be an Aboriginal Hawaiian? How did natural-born citizenship work? Where does blood quantum come into the conversation?
