Zhang Xiaomeng is the Vice Dean of the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business. Having dedicated many years to behavioral research, she was once the quintessential “model student”—a top graduate from a prestigious university who went on to pursue a Ph.D. in the United States before returning to China to become a business school professor. Yet during her doctoral studies, she struggled for four years, trapped in a vicious cycle of self-doubt. Even as a behavioral expert, she unconsciously manipulated her daughter during her parenting journey, pushing her to repeat her own path to “excellence.” She has seen too many people swept away by anxiety, drained by busyness, and led by their unconscious behaviors. She has also personally experienced the awakening that shifted her focus from seeking excellence externally to looking inward at herself, using her own journey to unravel the essence of emotions and the core of resilience. She wrote Resilience to teach people how to stay vibrant amid uncertainty, and she firmly believes that life is not defined by experiences themselves, but by how we interpret them. Having transitioned from chasing excellence to teaching others to be themselves, she says, “Resilience is a psychological muscle that must be trained.” The 899th storyteller: Zhang Xiaomeng, Associate Dean of the Cheung Kong Graduate School of Business.
