Scientists Finally Solved The Afghan DNA Mystery — After Thousands Of Years

For thousands of years, Afghanistan has stood at one of the most important crossroads of human migration in Eurasia. The Hindu Kush connected South Asia with Central Asia, Iran, the Middle East, and regions farther east, allowing populations to move through the mountains long before modern borders existed. Studies examining more than 500 Afghan samples from major populations including Pashtuns, Tajiks, Hazaras, Uzbeks, and Turkmen found that Afghan genetic diversity is best understood as a mosaic of ancestry from multiple geographic regions rather than a single ancestral source. Y-chromosome research also identified substantial differences between Afghan ethnic groups, including contrasting frequencies of R1a1a among Pashtuns and Tajiks and C3-M217 among Hazaras and Uzbeks, while finding evidence for a shared deeper ancestral foundation.
