According to Hindu tradition, this is the place where Lord Rama built the legendary Ram Setu to reach Lanka. Every year, millions of pilgrims visit Rameshwaram to seek blessings at the famous Ramanathaswamy Temple. But beyond the temples and spirituality lies another side of Rameshwaram that few people talk about. 📍 Dhanushkodi – The Forgotten Town Located at the southeastern tip of Rameshwaram Island, Dhanushkodi was once a thriving town with a railway station, schools, churches, hospitals, and thousands of residents. It served as an important link between India and Sri Lanka. Everything changed on the night of 22 December 1964. A powerful cyclone struck the region with devastating force. Massive waves swallowed the town, destroying homes, railway tracks, and infrastructure. The famous Pamban–Dhanushkodi passenger train was washed away, resulting in a tragic loss of life. After the disaster, Dhanushkodi was declared unfit for permanent habitation. Many residents relocated, leaving behind the ruins that still stand today. 🏚️ Why Is It Called a Ghost Town? The abandoned buildings, ruined church, deserted railway station remains, and the vast emptiness of the landscape have given Dhanushkodi the nickname "Ghost Town." Over the years, countless stories, mysteries, and local legends have emerged. Some visitors claim the place feels unusual after sunset. Others speak about strange experiences and unexplained sounds. However, there is no verified evidence of paranormal activity.
