Punch monkey left Oran-mama, the stuffed toy that raised him, lying alone in the rain at Ichikawa Zoo - so is he finally done with his toy mom?
Punch was born at Ichikawa City Zoo in July 2025. His mom didn't raise him, so his keepers gave him a plush orangutan, and people all over the world fell in love with the pair. In this video: the rainy day Punch dragged Oran-mama through the puddles and walked off without her, the newborn babies of June 2026 who barely leave their real moms, the big monkey a fan calls Punch's favorite, and what Punch did with Oran-mama on September 19.

The science in this video:
Stone handling: Japanese macaques play with stones - rubbing, clacking, carrying and mouthing them. Researchers have documented it since the late 1970s, and some troops have passed the habit down for generations (Michael Huffman).
Contact comfort: young primates look for soft, warm contact to feel safe, not just for food - the idea behind Harry Harlow's cloth-mother experiments.
Monkey Mountain is closed to visitors again, through at least October 9 (per Ichikawa City Zoo's notice). Punch is still there - we'll be here for the next chapter.
We love this little guy and deeply respect the keepers at Ichikawa City Zoo, a small local zoo doing its best for him every day.
