In December 1941, naval supremacy was measured by the weight of the battleship line. The catastrophic surprise strike on Pearl Harbor and the simultaneous destruction of Far East Air Force bombers caught grounded at Clark Field shattered Allied defensive lines. As Singapore fell and American forces endured the brutal siege of Bataan and Corregidor, the Japanese perimeter expanded across twenty million square miles. Imperial high command, clinging to Admiral Togo’s classic doctrine of decisive fleet action from 1905, sought to draw the US Pacific Fleet into a final battle at Midway. However, American codebreakers had intercepted the plan.
On June 4, 1942, the decisive clash unfolded. When Japanese commanders ordered their reserve aircraft to swap torpedoes for land bombs, the fleet was caught unprepared. In five fateful minutes, American carrier dive-bombers struck the Akagi and Soryu, sealing the fate of carrier warfare. Despite the loss of the USS Yorktown to counterstrikes from the Hiryu, Japan lost over two hundred veteran naval aviators, forever halting the outward expansion of the Rising Sun.
The second phase of the Pacific conflict transformed into an unprecedented logistical and aerial assault. Staged from Grand Island, Nebraska, aircrews trained on the pressurized Boeing B-29 Superfortress. Deploying across Mather Field and Hawaii to newly secured airstrips on Saipan, Guam, and Tinian, the 21st Bomber Command targeted the Japanese industrial core. Beginning with Dauntless Dotty striking the Nakajima engine works, and accelerating under General Curtis LeMay’s 600-bomber raids, the strategic air campaign decimated mainland defenses. Supported by Seventh Fighter Command P-51 Mustangs staging from Iwo Jima—an island that saved nearly two thousand crippled bombers—air power dismantled the empire's ability to resist, paving the way for the atomic missions and final peace.
