Mesa Verde's Fires Revealed Hundreds of Ruins Nobody Knew Existed

Two ranchers chasing lost cattle in December 1888 accidentally stumbled upon Cliff Palace, the largest cliff dwelling in North America — and for over a century, that discovery defined what we thought we knew about Mesa Verde. Archaeologists had catalogued roughly six hundred sites inside the national park. Then wildfires swept through in 2000 and 2002, stripping away the pinyon-juniper woodland, and survey teams walking the burned ground found site after site after site. The final tally approached five thousand. The Ancestral Puebloans had built an integrated, managed landscape across every mesa and canyon — agricultural terraces, check dams, signal towers — and ordinary vegetation had hidden nearly all of it.
