What if you could stop millions of litres of groundwater without building a conventional underground dam? At Fukushima Daiichi, groundwater was moving beneath the site toward the coast, with some of it entering areas affected by the damaged reactor buildings. Once that water encountered contamination, it became another major challenge for Japan's nuclear decommissioning effort. Japan's response was extraordinary: *freeze the ground itself.* In this engineering documentary, we examine Fukushima's massive frozen-soil barrier — a roughly 1.5-kilometre underground system designed to reduce groundwater flowing into the reactor area. Hundreds of pipes extend deep into the ground, circulating chilled fluid and extracting heat from the surrounding soil until the water within it freezes and connected frozen zones form a barrier.
