Aligarh Muslim University (AMU) is witnessing a major student movement demanding the restoration of the Aligarh Muslim University Students’ Union (AMUSU) and elections.
The protest, which began on 21 September 2026, has continued for 17 days. Students are demanding the restoration of the student union, appointment of an election authority and a clear timeline for elections. Student leader Yasir Fahad has also been on an indefinite hunger strike as part of the movement.
In this video, Danish Ali, Joint Secretary of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students’ Union (JNUSU), addresses the protesting students at AMU in a fierce and powerful speech. Reports identify Danish Ali as the JNUSU Joint Secretary, and she was among the JNU student leaders who came to AMU in support of the students' demand for union elections.
During her speech, Danish Ali strongly criticises what she describes as the “Sanghi administration”, alleging that the administration does not want a student union at AMU because an organised student body could question those in authority and expose alleged corruption and lack of accountability.
She argues that students must have the right to question the university administration and the government, and that student unions provide students with a collective platform to raise their concerns and challenge decisions affecting them.
The protest has intensified in recent days, with reports of FIRs against protesting students, disciplinary action and tensions between protesters and university authorities.
On 7 October, reports also said that protesters prevented an attempt to shift hunger-striking student Yasir Fahad to hospital after his condition deteriorated.
This video captures Danish Ali's fiery speech and the growing movement for the restoration of student representation at Aligarh Muslim University.

Should AMU student-union elections be restored?
Note: Statements regarding alleged corruption, administrative motives and the “Sanghi administration” are presented as claims made by the speaker/protesters and are not independently established facts.
