Volcanoes in Iceland

Iceland is famous for its fiery volcanic landscapes. But there is one place on Earth where you don’t just look at a volcano... you step inside it. Our first stop is THREE-noo-ka-gee-gur or Three Peaks Crater. Sleeping peacefully for over four thousand years, this dormant giant holds a geological secret found nowhere else on the planet. Most volcanoes plug themselves with cooled lava or collapse entirely after an eruption. But here, the magma mysteriously drained away like water down a drain, leaving a pristine, hollow chamber large enough to house the Statue of Liberty. As you descend four hundred feet to the crater floor, the true magic reveals itself. These vibrant, cathedral-like walls aren’t painted—they are scorched by ancient, mineral-rich magma, frozen in time. Standing on the floor of a planet's plumbing system, you realize just how small we really are. It’s an intimate, raw encounter with the forces that shape our world. This is a real town in Iceland that was fundamentally reshaped by a volcano. After 800 years of silence, the Earth tore open beneath Grindavík. Since late 2023, multiple massive fissure eruptions have forced the town into a state of total upheaval. Today, parts of the town feel entirely surreal. It’s a landscape of raw geologic power, guarded by massive man-made berms built to redirect molten lava. Its like a ghost town. No one lives here now. The government has purchased all houses so that citizens can buy houses elsewhere. But Grindavík isn't dead. Guided tours have carefully resumed, proving that Icelandic resilience is stronger than the magma beneath it. Leaving the safety of the town behind, you head north toward the fault lines. Crossing the threshold into the active Reykjanes volcanic zone means stepping directly onto a landscape that is still being born. The hike leads you across vast fields of still-warm lava. As you summit the ridge, the scale hits you. This is the Sundhnúkur crater row, a massive fissure system where rivers of liquid fire recently reshaped the peninsula.
