He Told Her To BURN His Letters. A Lawyer Called Her Demented. The Girl Was Harding's: Nan Britton
Officially, Warren Harding had no children. His family said so for ninety years, and a courtroom in Toledo, Ohio, sent the opposite claim home without a single piece of proof. But in October of 1919, in Asbury Park, New Jersey, a girl named Elizabeth Ann was born, and her father was a United States senator who would be elected president thirteen months later. Her mother, Nan Britton, had grown up in Marion with his pictures on her bedroom wall. After he died in a San Francisco hotel suite, his widow fed his papers into a fireplace. His family said he could not father a child. Nan wrote a book, and police seized the printing plates. In court, a former congressman called her demented. She had no letters to show the jury. He had asked her to burn them, and she did.
