Most of Mauna Kea lies hidden beneath the Pacific Ocean. Measured from its base on the deep seafloor, this Hawaiian volcano rises nearly 33,500 feet—taller than Mount Everest.
Journey down Hawaii’s submerged slopes to discover enormous underwater landslides, drowned coral reefs, ancient shorelines, deep-sea coral gardens, and freshwater concealed beneath the seabed. We’ll follow research vessels and submersibles across volcanic ridges, abyssal plains, and the buried geological record beneath Hilo.
What appears above the waves is only the summit. The true mountain stretches for miles into darkness, revealing how the Hawaiian Islands were built—and how they continue to change beneath the sea.
