Pacific Overtures Trailer 2024

One of Stephen Sondheim’s most ambitious, rarely seen creations comes to the Chocolate Factory. A collaboration with Japan's Umeda Arts Theatre this ‘thrilling’ production is a ‘revelation’ (Evening Standard), ‘Entertaining, as well as thought-provoking’. (The Times) The story of the arrival of the West in 1853 in isolated Japan is seen from an imagined Japanese perspective. The score is filled with some of Sondheim’s most ravishing music, including ‘Someone in a Tree’, ‘Pretty Lady’ and ‘A Bowler Hat’. “It’s crisply, wittily delivered by a fine cast on Paul Farnsworth’s simple set of burnished gold curls and sliding screens, using the intimate space to tell a rich and resonant story nimbly.” (Financial Times)
