Lion vs Hyena: Fight for Territory | FULL EPISODE | Wildlife Documentary follows the oldest law of the African grassland: the strong own the ground, and everyone else lives on the hours that remain. Beneath an acacia a lion pride sleeps through the heat of midday, and while lions and spotted hyenas rest, the lightest big cat in Africa goes out to hunt, because a cheetah has no land of its own, only hours of its own.
Through cinematic footage and educational storytelling, this documentary follows two cheetah mothers raising their litters inside lion country. On the Serengeti plains, of 125 cubs followed from the den, fewer than one in twenty lived to hunt on its own, and lions caused nearly four in every five of those losses. One mother loses her litter to a lioness waiting at the thicket. Another runs straight across the path of a patrolling male lion to pull him off the grass where her cubs lie still. Then the story climbs to the Tibetan Plateau, where summer lasts a few short months, a Tibetan fox must catch twenty pikas a day alone after wolves take his mate, and kiang mares close a ring of hooves that the wolf will not break.
What follows is the part almost no wildlife documentary shows. From the thirtieth minute the film moves to the territory itself: a lioness hunting alone on short grass at midday and failing, and the pride that does not fail, because in the Serengeti a lioness stays on the land where she was born for her whole life. Thirty eight years of records across forty six prides show that larger prides take the best river, thicket and trails and hold them longest. A rival line of lionesses appears across the water and the border is settled by counting roars, the pride traps a zebra herd between two wings, a wandering male coalition walks toward the cubs and meets a line of mothers it cannot push through, and an old male ends up alone at the edge before any battle for the crown. The crown is counted in seasons, the land in generations. The journey then opens to killer whale families led by grandmothers, a lion nursery in Katavi, great white sharks testing young seals and the wildebeest crossing of the Serengeti.
