Circle Geometry | Length Properties | Equal Tangents & Intersecting Chords | ICSE Class 10 Maths

In this video, we move from angle-related properties of a circle to important length-related properties. We begin with the Equal Tangents Property and prove why two tangents drawn from the same external point are equal. Next, we study the Intersecting Chords Property and understand why the product of the segment lengths of one chord is equal to that of the other chord. An important part of this lesson is understanding why congruent triangles are useful in one proof, while similar triangles are useful in another. Instead of simply memorising the proofs, we try to understand the reasoning behind choosing the right triangle property. We also extend the product relation to an external point and visually see how a secant gradually becomes a tangent when its two points of intersection merge into a single point. This naturally gives the tangent–secant relation. The aim, as always, is to understand the geometry first and then use the result confidently in problems.
