Every Chilling Theory on What the 4th Dimension Actually Is On the tenth of June, eighteen fifty-four, a quiet, nervous mathematician named Bernhard Riemann stood before a faculty committee at the University of Gottingen and delivered a lecture that would take decades for the world to fully absorb. He was presenting his Habilitation thesis, the formal requirement for a teaching position, and he had chosen a subject that most of his colleagues considered either too abstract or too unsettling to pursue seriously. Riemann proposed that geometry need not be confined to the three dimensions of ordinary experience. He argued, with complete mathematical rigour, that space could have any number of dimensions, and that a geometry built in four, five, or infinitely many dimensions would be just as internally consistent as the flat geometry of ancient Greece. The faculty listened. Most of them did not know what to make of it.
