The Dead Sea Mystery — What Does the Bible Say, and What Has Archaeology Found?
For thousands of years, the Dead Sea region has been connected with some of the Bible’s most famous stories — including Sodom and Gomorrah, Lot’s wife, the destruction of ancient cities, and the discovery of the Dead Sea Scrolls.
But what can archaeology actually tell us?
The Bible refers to the region as the “Salt Sea” and connects the Valley of Siddim with Sodom, Gomorrah, and other ancient cities.
In Genesis 19, the biblical account describes the destruction of Sodom and Gomorrah and says that Lot’s wife became a pillar of salt.
Archaeology, however, has not produced definitive evidence identifying a particular archaeological site as Sodom or Gomorrah. One proposed site, Tall el-Hammam, has received significant attention because of evidence for a catastrophic destruction event, but claims connecting it directly to Sodom remain disputed. A 2025 Scientific Reports retraction also removed a widely discussed airburst study because of concerns about its methodology and interpretation.
Then there are the Dead Sea Scrolls.
Beginning with discoveries in 1947, researchers eventually recovered thousands of fragments representing hundreds of ancient scrolls from caves in the Judean Desert. The manuscripts date broadly from the third century BCE to the first century CE.
Among them are ancient copies of biblical books. Manuscripts representing every book of the Hebrew Bible except Esther have been identified among the Qumran discoveries. Some closely resemble the later Masoretic tradition, while others preserve textual differences.
The Great Isaiah Scroll is particularly important: it is the oldest known surviving manuscript of a complete biblical book.
So, does the Dead Sea prove or disprove the Bible?
Not that simply.
The archaeological record gives us physical evidence of ancient places, communities, manuscripts, objects, and historical environments. It can provide remarkable context for the biblical world, but archaeology cannot automatically establish that every event described in a religious text happened exactly as the text describes it.
And that is what makes the Dead Sea so fascinating.
Some questions have evidence.
Some have competing interpretations.
And some remain unanswered.
The search is still ongoing.
