I used to find hymns frustrating. I didn't grow up with them, and often felt like they were used by people as an excuse not to sing new songs. Sometimes our nostalgia can get in the way. However, I've felt challenged over the last year as I've engaged more directly with them, and how they especially work in contexts like this. Often I'm finding myself wanting to sing a hymn quietly over a contemporary worship song. They're like old folk songs, gently accompanying your day to day.
So here is another hymns focused session as I try to learn more of them! There is a focus on Jesus being the light by which we can see all other things rightly, which I hadn't planned but was quite beautiful to meditate on.
I also read a poem, a sonnet I wrote recently. The words are:
Carrying a burden
Through darkness’ wooden bower
Heavy in my turning step
To escape the darker powers
Now emptying an ocean
One small cup at a time
It isn’t the most perfect motion
And still, it holds the line
Till light dawns in the saving East
Or star far off glints brightly
I’ve learned to raise a toast and feast
And heaviness, hold lightly
Come now join, don’t be afraid
For all things at the feet are laid
