In this video, we take a look at a Pacman/maze type game I wrote in Commodore 64 BASIC. I started this project a few years ago after watching a video series by GRayDefender where he created a PacMan type game for the C64 written in assembly but by did some initial prototyping in BASIC.
That got me to wondering what sort of performance you could get out of such a game written in BASIC on the old C64. I used one of GRayDefenders screen maps as a starting point and toyed with the idea. It had been decades since I did any programming in such an old dialect of BASIC and it took a short while to get used to it again, using line numbers is painful! I relearned some BASIC speed up tricks, learned some new tricks from some nice folks on the Lemon64 forum and had a bit of fun.
When Robin, form the 8-bit Show and Tell channel, covered some C64 BASIC speed up tricks I never knew about, including short-circuiting conditional statements. I thought I would dust off this old code and see if I could make it fast enough to make a ‘playable’ game of some sort.
Let’s see what sort of performance we can get with a game written in BASIC!
