Slovak President Peter Pellegrini used his address to the 81st United Nations General Assembly to warn that artificial intelligence, autonomous weapons and the erosion of international law are creating new risks for global security. His strongest warning focused on AI-powered military systems. “Machines should never be allowed to make life or death decisions on their own.” Pellegrini said the international community needs strong rules for emerging technologies, just as it developed frameworks for nuclear, chemical and biological weapons. He warned that unequal access to artificial intelligence could create new global divisions, while autonomous weapons and AI-driven systems require urgent international attention. But Pellegrini also argued that AI can become a tool for diplomacy, mediation and conflict prevention when used responsibly and under human oversight. On Ukraine, he said the war continues to bring destruction close to Slovakia’s borders and called for support for serious diplomatic efforts aimed at ending Russia’s war and building lasting peace. “Leadership is not shown by the willingness to escalate. It requires the courage to de-escalate.” Pellegrini also called for protection of civilians and humanitarian access in Gaza, reaffirmed Slovakia’s support for a negotiated two-state solution, and urged continued attention to conflicts such as Sudan.
