Not all Himalayan winter treks get the same amount of snow. In this video, we explain why two treks — Kedarkantha and Kuari Pass — consistently have the most snow every season. The amount of snow on a trek depends mainly on two factors: 1) How close the trek is to high mountain ranges like the Nanda Devi cluster. These send cold winds across nearby trails, keeping temperatures low and snow intact for longer. 2) The direction of the slope. Treks like Kedarkantha and Kuari Pass lie on northern-facing slopes, which receive much less sunlight. This slows snowmelt, keeping trails snow-covered for weeks. We also talk about how this plays out in real trekking conditions — for instance, why Kotgaon (often called “Coldgaon”) stays cold while the opposite side of the valley basks in sunlight.
