John once believed he was on his way to becoming a professional athlete. Years later, he was riding freight trains across the country, searching for freedom while struggling to escape the patterns that followed him wherever he went.
In this episode of Day in the Life, John shares the path that took him from a promising basketball career and full college scholarship to addiction, incarceration, and eventually a life sentence for second-degree murder.
Growing up in Toledo, Ohio, John was deeply influenced by his grandfather, whom he called Pop. Pop taught him about responsibility, character, faith, and what it meant to become a good man. But as John grew older, substance use began to overpower the direction his family had tried to give him.
After completing treatment, earning his high school equivalency, and receiving a basketball scholarship, John appeared to be rebuilding his life. He made the dean’s list and played for a nationally ranked junior college team. Then one decision pulled him back toward alcohol, and the life he had worked to rebuild began to unravel.
After leaving college and serving an earlier prison sentence, John found himself searching for another way forward. A chance encounter introduced him to freight train travel. Riding the rails gave him a feeling of freedom and an escape from the pressure he felt to become somebody. But as John reflects in the film, no matter how far he traveled, he was still taking himself with him.
In 2001, John’s journey brought him to Springfield, Missouri, where a fight escalated and another man lost his life. John was later convicted of second-degree murder and sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole. At 31 years old, he believed his life was over.
Today, John works in the staff barbershop inside the correctional facility, cutting hair for the people who work there and finding purpose through service. He has remained clean and sober for nearly 24 years and credits his faith with changing how he understands identity, success, and responsibility.
John does not minimize the harm caused by his actions. Instead, he reflects on the decisions, influences, and unresolved struggles that shaped his life. His story explores addiction and recovery, accountability, faith, personal transformation, and the difference between building a career and developing character.
“I believe that character is more important than career.”
