Upanayanam Mahotsavam at Sri Sathya Sai Vaatsalyam | Highlights Video

Sri Sathya Sai Vaatsalyam hosted a sacred two-day Upanayanam Mahotsavam, during which vatus across ages—from young boys to adults—were initiated into the timeless path of Brahmacharya, with the blessings of Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba. The Mahotsavam commenced with Homam and Maha Abhishekam to Sri Sathyaatmatva Mahaganapathy, followed by Guru Ganapathi Puja, Naandhi, and Punyahavachanam, invoking divine blessings and sanctifying the sacred proceedings. The second day witnessed Guru Ganapathi Prarthana, Chaula Homam, Mathru Bhojanam, followed by the deeply moving Mathru Bhojanam, where each mother lovingly blessed and fed her son before his initiation into Brahmacharya. The Upanayanam ceremony culminated with the investiture of the Yajnopaveetam (sacred thread) and the sacred Brahmopadesham, during which the fathers initiated the vatus into the Gayatri Mantra—a universal prayer for the illumination of the intellect and the welfare of all—formally welcoming them onto the path of Vedic learning and righteous living. Surrounded by the blessings of elders, the newly initiated Brahmacharis then learnt the sacred discipline of Sandhyavandanam, beginning this lifelong practice. Upanayanam is far more than the investiture of the sacred thread. ‘Upa’ means ‘additional’ and ‘Nayanam’ means ‘eyes’, signifying the awakening of an inner vision that enables one to perceive the divine principle of Brahman present in everything and everyone. Through Brahmopadesham, the Vatus received the sacred Gayatri Mantra—a universal prayer for the illumination of the intellect and the welfare of all. The sacred thread and the daily observance of Sandhyavandanam thereafter become lifelong disciplines that nurture this inner vision through purity, devotion, self-discipline, and constant spiritual awareness. As Bhagawan Sri Sathya Sai Baba reminds us, the experience of Brahman is the experience of oneness—seeing the same Divine presence in every being and throughout all of creation. In this spirit, the Upanayanam Mahotsavam marked not merely the beginning of a Vedic discipline, but the awakening of a way of life rooted in unity, love, reverence, and spiritual awareness. The Mahotsavam concluded with Mangala Aarti and Prasadam, leaving the Brahmacharis and their families with Bhagawan's blessings as they embarked on this sacred lifelong journey.
