Creating a dark, or low key image, is more than just lowering your exposure or shooting with barely any light. The way we present an image that shows a dark location on screen, is actually more about contrast - and in this case, bigger contrast ratios between light and dark. By ensuring there are large contrast ratios in your scene, with a smaller percentage of highlights than shadows in the image as a whole, you can convey a darker scenario to your audience.
