First Time in Oban? Don't Book the Mull Ferry

Six ferry routes leave Oban, and only one of them is a day trip. This is which boat to take, which one to skip, and the ticket rule that decides it. Every CalMac route out of the terminal wants an advance online booking — foot passengers included. The Gallanach–Kerrera boat doesn't: it's turn up and go, on a ticket valid for any sailing in the timetable period. On a coast where the forecast writes your plans, that's the difference between a day out and a day committed. So: skip the Mull day return (Mull is a car-and-a-night island, not a day trip), take the five-minute crossing to Kerrera for the Gylen Castle walk and the tearoom, and keep Lismore by bike from Port Appin as the runner-up. Also in here: the two-mile mistake that leaves people at the wrong slipway with no way to buy a ticket, the last boat off Kerrera and why missing it means staying the night, and the king who died on the island in 1249. ⏱ CHAPTERS 0:02 Six Routes. One shot in this video is an illustration, captioned as such on screen: a period-style watercolour of a 13th-century galley fleet, used because no footage of a 1249 event exists. Every other shot is a real photograph or video of the real place. #Oban #Kerrera #Scotland
