Early LUP-specification elevators are reaching 20 years of age, and some older brands such as Dong Yang (acquired by ThyssenKrupp) and Express Lifts (acquired by Otis) no longer exists. This has made replacement of its original parts challenging for town councils. In the past, such elevators have undergone another expensive LUP process, which involved removal of the entire doors and car to be replaced with a completely new product. However, town councils in more recent times have decided that modernizing the elevator and keeping the LUP-compliant parts may be more cost-efficient. While Lift A was completed replaced with a brand new ULift, Lift B's cab survived with a change of its controller and logic to ensure that both elevators continue to work as a set. The result is an elevator that is slower than before, but still usable (and to some older folks, a safer) elevator.
