Madhugiri, was part of the domain of the Gangas and later came under the rule of the Nolambas, Vijayanagara and Mysore kingdom. The ancient vestiges found in Madhugiri apart from the fort include two temples -Venkatramana and Malleswara, built by the Vijayanagara feudatories in the Dravidian style located in village, a Jaina temple on the precincts of the Madhugiri fort and a ruined Gopalakrishna temple on the top of the hill. The erection of the original fort is ascribed to Raja Hera Gauda who hailed from a minor ruling family under the Vijayanagara kings in 15th century AD. In 1678 AD, the fort was captured by Devaraja, the Dalavayi of Mysore. Later Haider Ali extended and further strengthened it. The fort, built on a hill consisting of one huge mass of rock, is considered to be one of the strongest in south Karnataka. It is built of cyclopean granite set in lime mortar and enclosed by parapet, it accommodates a few secular buildings near the foot hills including a pillared mandapa. A Jain temple is located in the precincts, abutting to the fort wall. The ruins of Gopalakrishna temple is also found on the top of the hill. There are a number of springs within the fort. These reservoirs are provided with brick build steps. There are several gates leading to the top of the hill such as Antarala-bagilu, Diddi-bagilu, the Mysore gate, etc. The fortification in the north had a series of bastions and battlements with musket holes. ಮಧುಗಿರಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟ ತುಮಕೂರು ಜಿಲ್ಲೆಯಲ್ಲಿರುವ ಒಂದು ಐತಿಹಾಸಿಕ ಸ್ಥಳ. ಕರ್ನಾಟಕದ ರಾಜಧಾನಿ ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ ೧೦೭ ಕಿ.ಮೀ. ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ. ಇದು ಏಷ್ಯಾದ ಎರಡನೇ ಅತಿದೊಡ್ಡ ಏಕಶಿಲಾಬೆಟ್ಟವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇದು ಪಾವಗಡದಿಂದ ಬಳ್ಳಾರಿಯವರೆಗೆ ಹರಡಿರುವ ಪರ್ವತ ಶ್ರೇಣಿಯ ಭಾಗವಾಗಿದೆ. ಇಲ್ಲಿ ೧೭ನೇ ಶತಮಾನದಲ್ಲಿ ನಿರ್ಮಾಣವಾದ ಕೋಟೆ ಇದೆ. ಇದು ಸಮುದ್ರ ಮಟ್ಟದಿಂದ ೩೯೮೫ ಅಡಿ (೧೧೯೩ ಮೀಟರ್)ಗಳಷ್ಟು ಎತ್ತರವಿದೆ. ಇದು ಒಂದು ಚಾರಣದ ಸ್ಥಳವಾಗಿದೆ. ಮಧುಗಿರಿ ಕೋಟೆಯನ್ನು ಕಟ್ಟಿಸಿದವರು ಸ್ಥಳೀಯ ಪಾಳೇಗಾರರಾಗಿದ್ದ ರಾಜಾ ಹಿರೇಗೌಡ. ೧೬೭೦ರ ಸುಮಾರಿಗೆ ಈ ಕೋಟೆಯನ್ನು ಮಟ್ಟಿನಿಂದ ನಿರ್ಮಿಸಲಾಗಿತ್ತು. ಅನಂತರ ಹೈದರಾಲಿ, ಟಿಪ್ಪುಸುಲ್ತಾನ್ ಹಾಗೂ ಮೈಸೂರರಸರ ಆಳ್ವಿಕೆಯಲ್ಲಿ ಕೋಟೆ ಪುನರುಜ್ಜೀವನಗೊಂಡಿತು. ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತಳದಲ್ಲಿ ನಾಲ್ಕು ಗುಹೆಗಳಿವೆ. ಭೀಮನ ದೊಣೆ, ನವಿಲು ದೊಣೆ ಎಂಬ ಎರಡು ಕೆರೆಗಳೂ ಇವೆ. ಮಧುಗಿರಿ ಬೆಟ್ಟದ ತುತ್ತತುದಿಯಲ್ಲಿ ಹಿಂದೆ ಇತ್ತೆಂದು ಹೇಳಲಾಗುವ ಗೋಪಾಲಕೃಷ್ಣ ದೇವಾಲಯ ಈಗ ಪಾಳುಬಿದ್ದಿದೆ. ಬೆಂಗಳೂರಿನಿಂದ ೧೦೭ ಕಿ.ಮಿ. ರಾಷ್ಟ್ರೀಯ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ ೪ರಲ್ಲಿ ಸಿಗುವ ಡಾಬಸ್ ಪೇಟೆಯಿಂದ ಕೊರಟಗೆರೆ ಮಾರ್ಗವಾಗಿ ಮಧುಗಿರಿ ತಲುಪಬಹುದು. ಕೊರಟಗೆರೆ ಮತ್ತು ಪಾವಗಡದ ನಡುವೆ ಇದೆ. ಅಥವಾ ತುಮಕೂರು ನಗರದಿಂದ ರಾಜ್ಯಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ ೩೩ ಮತ್ತು ರಾಜ್ಯಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ ೩ ರ ಮೂಲಕ (ಮಧುಗಿರಿ ರಸ್ತೆ , ಕೊರಟಗೆರೆ ಮಾರ್ಗ) ಮಧುಗಿರಿ ತಲುಪಬಹುದು. ಕೊರಟಗೆರೆಯಿಂದ ೧೮ ಕಿ.ಮಿ. ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ.ರಾ ಹೆದ್ದಾರಿ ೪ರ ಸಿರಾದಿಂದ ಬಡವನಹಳ್ಳಿ ಮಾರ್ಗವಾಗಿ ೩೯ ಕಿ ಮೀ ದೂರದಲ್ಲಿದೆ
