In this series:
Rather than chase trends and spend way too much money on Lego Batman: Legacy of the Dark Knight, I revisit Lego Batman 1. My history with this game is that my parents bought it for me on the Wii after I asked for Lego Batman 2. I later got that game for the Wii as well. Several years later, a Steam sale made it so buying Lego Batman 3 on Steam would have cost me just as much as buying it and its two predecessors in a bundle, so I did the latter. I've since completed the game 100% (that's saved game 1), but won't be doing so here.
In this video:
Using the Legos the Riddler left behind to assemble a clue, Robin thinks he's planning to rob the Eiffel Tower, though some of the pieces weren't used. Batman builds the Gotham Gold Reserves, which Robin apparently didn't recognize until Alfred pulled it up on the Batcomputer. Heading there, we learn that Two-Face is apparently immune to toxic waste in this game (normally he has no real superpowers, including in the DC Animated Universe that inspired the toy design that this game used) when he floods the first interior room with it. Closer to the vault, there's some laser grid things on the floor that instantly kill you. I'm pretty sure even the invincibility cheat (and by "cheat", I mean "Red Power Brick") won't save your life, but I'm pretty sure it'll at least make it so you don't lose any studs. I could be remembering it wrong. Apparently, in the comics, the Riddler's cane is mundane and does not have mind control tech, something that, as far as I know, is supposed to be the "gimmick" of the Mad Hatter (who is in this game and does have mind control). The Riddler loses mind control in Lego Batman 2 (and I don't think it's a gameplay mechanic in that game at all), but there are special boxes only he can open. I remember reading that the Riddler regains mind control in the third game. Here and now, I decide to also show you the game's credits at least once and also the villain hub, Arkham Asylum. The reason it seems to functions more like a prison (albeit one that's way too easy to escape, something even Alfred acknowledges in the manual) than an insane asylum is because in the real-world past, some insane asylums were apparently converted from prisons. Arkham is also where the custom character creator is, so to alter the custom characters, you have to beat a hero side chapter/episode because the lever to switch to the villains only works after you've done so.
