In a –75°C whiteout, an 80-year-old Arctic widow keeps her underground shelter alive with a clay hearth and earthen walls—melting snow for heat, feeding sheep and chickens at a separate pen site, then dragging her tools onto the ice lake. She ice-fishes a heavy haul and even pulls up a king crab, then returns to smoke fish outside to preserve it. The scent draws a white polar bear that starts stealing from the drying line, forcing her to light an arrow and drive it back with fire. Knowing the bear may return, she rushes to the livestock area to set rope snares, torches, and a bonfire barrier. When the bear comes again, the traps and flame line stop it before it can reach the pen doors—buying her one exhausted, silent night of survival.
