॥ श्री गजानन स्तुतिः ॥ | Shri Gajanana Stuti | The Prayer the Forest Itself Made
Ganesha himself promises what this stotra gives: sarva-siddhi-da, it grants every accomplishment, and bhukti-mukti-prada, it gives both worldly fulfilment and liberation. Listen once each morning before you begin your work, and once more before sleep.
THE STORY BEHIND IT
Almost every stotra is spoken by a sage or a Deva. This one is not.
The speaker is Dandakaranya — the great forest of the Deccan, the wilderness through which Rama walked in exile. The forest itself praises Gajanana, and when the praise is finished it asks for one thing only. Not rain. Not fruit. Not safety.
"Dwell always in my body."
Ganesha grants it, and then goes further: he declares the whole of Dandakaranya to be his kshetra, his own sacred ground. The stotra comes from the Mudgala Purana, Khanda 6, Adhyaya 13, and belongs to the ekadasha stotra group — the eleven great hymns of that Purana.
THE LEADER OF ALL LEADERS
"Nayakanam vishesena nayakaya vinayaka
Nayakair varjitayaiva nayakatva pradayine"
"To the leader of all leaders — Vinayaka, who himself has no leader above him, and who is the giver of leadership itself."
Four times in two lines the word nayaka turns over. Vi-nayaka literally means the one without a nayaka: there is no chief above him. And yet the verse ends nayakatva-pradayine — the one who hands that same leadership to whoever asks for it. He does not guard the top place. He gives it away.
MAKE MY NAME MEANINGFUL
"Adhuna varado si tvam tada me nama sarthakam
Kuru nityam vasa svamin mama dehe gajanana"
"If you are truly the giver of boons, then make my name meaningful. Dwell forever, O Lord, in my body."
This is the whole prayer in one line. The forest does not ask to be given something. It asks to be inhabited. And in the verse that follows it asks for the only thing it still lacks — bhakti that reveals Brahman: "Bhaktim dehi tvadiyam me sada brahma prakashinim."
One more verse startles most devotees. Ganesha is called maha-vighna-dharine, the bearer of the great obstacle, and in the same breath pada-datre tatha hantre — the one who gives position and takes it away. He is not only the remover of obstacles. He is the one who places them.
BENEFITS - THE PHALASHRUTI
Gajanana's own reply closes the hymn:
"Tvaya kritam idam stotram madiyam sarva-siddhidam
Bhavishyati maharanya bhukti-mukti-pradam param"
"This stotra you have made in my praise will grant every accomplishment, O great forest, and will give the highest of all — both enjoyment and liberation."
Both. Most stotras offer one road or the other; this one is given for the life you are living now and for the freedom beyond it.
WHEN TO RECITE
• Every Chaturthi, the fourth lunar day, and especially Sankashti Chaturthi
• During Ganesh Chaturthi, when Gajanana is invoked into the home
• Before beginning any new work, journey, business or study
• Daily at dawn, facing east
DID YOU KNOW
• The hymn is in anushtubh metre — eight syllables to a pada, four padas to a verse — which is why it chants so evenly.
• Ganesha is called Mayuresha here. Mayurakshetra, Morgaon, is the first of the eight Ashtavinayaka shrines, and the closing verses place it at the very heart of Dandakaranya.
• He is also Svananda-vasine, the dweller in Svananda, the abode of self-arising bliss, and Herambha, protector of the weak.
