One of the UK’s Last Mercedes Hydraulic Platforms? | End of an Era #ukfirefighterhub #fleetfocus

After nearly 30 years on the run, Bridgwater Fire Station’s Mercedes Saxon 1824 Hydraulic Platform has now been taken out of service. Back in April, UK Firefighter Hub visited Bridgwater Fire Station in Somerset to document this very special appliance while it was still operational with Devon and Somerset Fire and Rescue Service. New to Bridgwater in November 1995 under Somerset Fire Brigade, the Mercedes Saxon 1824 HP, registration N826 BYC, served the town and surrounding area for almost three decades. It has now been replaced by a VEMA 343 Aerial Ladder Platform. During our visit, we were shown around by Green Watch under the command of Watch Manager Webb, with Firefighters Dan and Paul helping demonstrate the appliance and its capabilities. This Fleet Focus episode takes a closer look at the appliance, its Simon hydraulic platform, the skill involved in pitching and operating it, and why machines like this mean so much to the firefighters who worked with them. Appliances like this are more than just bits of kit. They represent a different era of the fire service, full of stories, jobs, training nights, station life and memories.
