On 19 February 2026, five Russian military aircraft flew out over the Bering Sea. Russia says its bombers stayed in the air for more than 14 hours, and American jets went up to meet them. NORAD called it routine. That is because here, at the top of the Pacific, the United States and Russia are not on opposite sides of the world: between Little Diomede (USA) and Big Diomede (Russia) there are only 3.8 km (2.4 miles) of water, with the border and the International Date Line running between them. So why does this tiny gap matter so much, and who is watching it now? In this video we follow the map: the Diomedes, the land bridge, the 1867 Alaska Purchase, the WWII air route, the Ice Curtain, today's NORAD intercepts, Arctic shipping and the 'Putin–Trump tunnel'.
