What remains 02 / 03 · Changthang Nomadic Festival Korzok | Ladakh · August 2026 When a way of life changes, what remains? Is it the food we still make with our hands? The clothes we bring out on special days? The songs we remember, even when we no longer live the way our ancestors did? At the festival, I found myself wondering about this. For a few days, different generations and different parts of Changthang gathered in one place. There were old ways of making food, wool being spun and woven, traditional clothes being prepared and worn, children carrying instruments, songs being sung, and dances being performed. Some of these things may no longer belong to everyday life in the way they once did. But does a tradition have to remain unchanged to remain meaningful? And when something moves from everyday life to memory, celebration, or performance— what does it become? Perhaps we don’t carry the past exactly as it was. Perhaps we carry pieces of it— in our hands, in what we wear, in the songs we remember, and in the stories we tell. A month after the festival, in another place, we unexpectedly heard the voices of Achooly Tsering Namgyal and Tsering Namchok again. The festival was long over. But the singing continued. And I was left wondering— When a way of life changes, is what remains the tradition itself, or the reason we still come together because of it? Perhaps what remains is not the old way of life itself, but the heart of it— the things that still bring people together. #Changthang #Ladakh #NomadicFestival #ChangthangNomads #FieldNotes #BackToTheBasics #NomadicLife
